UNESCO established World Teachers' Day in 1994 to draw public attention to the important role of teachers in building a better future for the world's children. The day is celebrated in over 100 countries and in Australia this year, on Friday, 31 October.
In 2008, World Teachers' Day acknowledges the many ways teachers make connections to the world through their teaching and celebrates teachers as a significant force in building understanding of the world.
Teachers are 'world teachers' every day. In the curriculum they teach and how they teach it, through the connections they make with and for their students and by the way they encourage learning and problem solving, they bring the world into their classrooms and help to build a better world for their students as local and global citizens.
